Originally called SongliangMountain for its immense height, it had its name altered to Tianmen (Heaven’s Gate) after a cave miraculously opened up and became the inexplicable Tianmen Gate. Believing it a sign of propitiousness, the then Emperor changed its name and established TianmenCounty at its foot, which became ZhangjiajieCity today. At 1,518.6 meters in elevation, it’s the highest peak in Zhangjiajie and known as the city’s soul. On the mountain 4 cultures co-exist, namely heaven, celestial mountain, seclusion and Buddhism. Adding to its sense of otherworldly fairyland, there are numerous myths and legends surrounding this place, including the opening of the cave, its turning of direction, hidden treasures and rumored sacred beasts.
